2009 Homecoming Event - A Cheerful Day Despite the Rain

Maud Garrick, Homecoming Coordinator, says attendance at the 29th Lower Peach Tree gathering was excellent. "The church was filled and people stood in the vestibule." The crowd included more than 20 newcomers who are always so welcome. There was some light rain during the worship service, but the skies cleared by dinner time. Some braved the damp grass and enjoyed their meals on the lawn while others gathered under the colorful serving tent.

THE WORSHIP SERVICE   Pastor Paul S. McVay preached the sermon this year. He has been with the church for several months, and we welcome him to his first homecoming event. Joining him in leading the service were our talented pianist Ann Dozier, song leader Gene Stabler, and choir members.

INFORMAL TIME   Jan D. Garrick continued in her traditional role as able and entertaining emcee. Pearl Capel led the flower sharing portion of the program. Featured objects this year were "the old wood stove and things akin to it."

[Image] L. J. Smith, Jr."MR. HOMECOMING"  The storytelling and Christian ministry of Loyal Jackson Smith, Jr., a homecomer with almost perfect attendance since the event began, enriched the lives of all who knew him. L.J. died October 19, 2008, at the age of 92. His death leaves us saddened but smiling in fond remembrance of the friendship and inspiration he brought each year to the town of his birth.

THANK YOU  We rely upon our homecomers to serve as reporters and photographers sending us valuable narrative and pictures for use on this website. Without their contributions the pages would be very dull indeed.

HONORED
Each year we recognize the "youngest at heart" man and woman present. Many of these honorees in past years have been very faithful in their attendance. We also value our children and teens and especially like having them participate in the service and other activities. This year two young fellows were successful in ringing the church bell - usually an adult task. In addition we enjoyed a lovely vocal solo by an enthusiastic young lady who also contributed to the informal program.

This year you will find quotes from Maud and a narrative which Art Green so graciously provided. Photo credits: Becky Cotton, Jan Garrick, and Lida Landreth. Thank you all for your help.
